The Management

Director - Jean-Marie Devoisselle

The Institute Charles Gerhardt Montpellier (ICGM), Institute for Molecular Chemistry and Material Sciences, is a Joint Research Unit (UMR 5253) created in January 2007 and supported by the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), Université de Montpellier (UM) and Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Montpellier (ENSCM). The ICGM is a multidisciplinary laboratory working in the fields of Energy, Environment and Health. Organized in three scientific departments, it represents 240 permanent staff and over 200 non-permanent staff (including doctoral students, post-doctoral students, and visiting/guest researchers).

  • 152 teachers and researchers
  • 11 Professor Emeritus
  • 81 engineers, technicians and administrative
  • 149 PhD students and postdocs.

After a PhD in Biotechnology in 1988, Jean-Marie Devoisselle joined the U.F.R Sciences Pharmaceutiques in Montpellier. In 1993, he created a research group, working on nanotechnology applied to the health sector (vectorisation, controlled release). His research group was based in the laboratory of "Matériaux Catalytiques et Catalyse en Chimie Organique" (UMR 5618), where he headed the research group ATIPE CNRS, working on an innovative subject associating actives substances with mesoporous silicas. Since his arrival in the ICGM team "Matériaux Avancés pour la Catalyse et la Santé (MACS)”, his research turned to a deep theme covering the formulation, the vectorisation and systems for controlled release. Jean-Marie Devoisselle became a full Professor in 200, at the University of Montpellier. He was the lead of the Institute Carnot Chimie Balard between 2011 and 2016. He became the Director of the Institute Charles Gerhardt Montpellier on 1st January 2015, a post which he currently occupies.

Assistant Directors

Deborah Jones joined the University of Montpellier in 1985 as an associate researcher at CNRS, and subsequently became the head of research at the Laboratoire des Agrégats Moléculaires et Matériaux Inorganiques (UMR 5072). She is particularly involved in research on materials for the electrochemical conversion of energy, and is the author of 194 publications, 16 review articles and books chapters, and 13 patents. She was the head of a pan-European project  on materials for fuel cell applications, and was also the coordinator of several European collaborative projects. She is a member of various international committees for the evaluation of project proposal on energy-related topics, and she chaired the Division of Energy Conversion and Storage of the International Society of Electrochemistry (2013). She was the head of the ICGM research team "Agrégats, Interfaces et Matériaux pour l’Energie" from 2011 to 2014, and is Director of the Fédération de Recherche Chimie Balard (FR3105) and the current head of the Department of Solid State and Divided Matter Chemistry at the ICGM.

Eric Clot is a graduate of the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon, where he obtained the “Aggregation of Chemistry” in 1990. After completing a PhD thesis in Orsay, supervised by Odile Eisenstein, he joined the CNRS in 1996, working in the “Laboratoire de Structure et Dynamique des Systèmes Moléculaires et Solides” in Montpellier. In 2007, he was promoted to Director of Research at the CNRS, in the Institute Charles Gerhardt Montpellier, where he was head of the CTMM team from 2011 to 2014.
His research activities cover the study of the structure and the reactivity of complexes of active transition metals in homogeneous catalysis using computational chemistry methods. More specifically, he is interested in the reactions which can functionalize inert binders such as C-H, DC, C-X, B-H, among others. Eric Clot is the current head of the Department of Physical Chemistry.

In 1989, Jean Jacques Robin defended his doctoral thesis on the chemistry of polymers, specifically concerning the behavior of ozone polyolefins. In 1990, he became the director of the Centre Européen de Recherche sur le Recyclage des Matières Plastiques (CEREMAP), and in 1999, he joined the UMR CNRS 5076 in the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Montpellier (ENSCM). His research activity develops themes in melt synthesis of transplanted copolymers and polycondensates by transesterification. In 2003, he became the head of the research team Synthèse et Organisations Macromoléculaires (SOM) of the UMR 5073, which joined the ICGM in 2006. Currently, he develops research projects around functional materials or materials resistant to environmental pressures. Jean-Jacques Robin is Professor at Polytech' Montpellier, within the Department of Materials and Assistant Director of the ICGM, in charge of the Molecular and Macromolecular Chemistry Department.
