Modélisation & Élaboration de Solides Multifonctionnels
The group MESO consists of both, theoreticians and experimentalists, allowing a great diversity of studies. Its main goal is to propose new materials (or new compositions) within the general ICGM transverse theme "Energy", starting from the computer and ending on the lab bench.
The work is focused on "multifunctionnal" materials which exhibit several properties such as thermoelectricity, important non linear optical characteristics, increased strength or anti-corrosion properties. Its research project aims to elaborate, characterize and optimize different kinds of solid materials taking advantage of an original combination of ab initio simulations, elaboration methods and characterizations.

Savoir-faire - Compétences
The group MESO is a small group of theoreticians and experimentalists working in material science. Our aim is to study solids with specific properties (thermoelectricity, enhanced strength, peculiar optical properties,...) that are interesting both from the fundamental point of view and from the possible industrial applications. We have thus activities that enter the "Energy" domain but we are also concerned by environmental aspects since we try to work on materials that are abundant, cheap and non toxic (or less toxic than the usual elements used in a specific field).
With the help of industrial contracts (Total/Hutchinson) and of the ANR (PHIMS) we study several kinds of materials : zinc antimonides, silicides and intermetallic Heusler compounds.
We first exploit our expertise in ab initio simulations to develop new promising materials or improve existing compositions. Then we study the phase diagrams and the stability of these materials taking into account the importance of the defects with CALPHAD approaches. And finally we elaborate and characterize the materials (with the appropriate methods) in the lab. in order to confirm (or not) the results obtained in the computer.
So in a sense we have an integrated procedure to develop and improve new materials, that goes from the computer to the lab. bench.
