Since 2012, Frédéric Jaouen is a Senior Research Scientist of the French National Research Scientific Council (CNRS) at the laboratory for Aggregates, Interfaces, Materials and Energy, Charles Gerhardt Institute for Molecular Chemistry and Materials. After graduating from Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble (France), he obtained his Ph.D. entitled “Electrochemical characterization of porous cathodes in the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell” from the Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm, Sweden) under the supervision of Prof. G. Lindbergh. He then moved to Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (Canada) as a Research Associate in Prof. Dodelet’s group where he became a specialist in precious metal free catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction.
Current research interests include the synthesis, ex-situ and electrochemical characterisation of precious metal free catalysts. Synthesis methods involve the formation of microporous carbon materials by pyrolysis of thermally decomposable precursors or by templating methods.

He currently holds a Chair of Excellence from the “Agence Nationale de la Recherche”.

Thème de Recherche

  • Electrocatalysis for PEM fuel cells
  • Precious-metal-free and Pt-based catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction
  • Durability studies of catalysts and membrane electrode assemblies
  • Development of catalysts and complete cells based on Earth-abundant elements for low-temperature electrochemical energy conversion devices
  • Elucidation of structure-property relationships to rationalize and improve the electrocatalytic activity, power performance and stability performance of electrode materials, in particular those based on Earth-abundant elements or comprising ultralow amounts of precious elements.
